Star Wars 3D postponed for Star Wars Episode VII
Lucasfilms has confirmed that its plans to release episodes II and III of the Star Wars films in 3D have been put on hold in order to concentrate on Star Wars Episode VII.
In recent days it has been announced that J.J. Abrams of Lost, Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol, and (most pertinently) the recent Star Trek movie reboot will take the helm of the brand new Star Wars installment. It’s set to hit cinemas in 2015.
This news has led to the cancellation of plans to release Star Wars Episode II and Star Wars Episode III in 3D at cinemas this autumn.
“Lucasfilm has decided to postpone this fall’s scheduled release of Star Wars Episodes II and III in 3D,” reads the statement over on the official Star Wars website. “Given the recent development that we are moving forward with a new Star Wars trilogy, we will now focus 100 percent of our efforts on Star Wars: Episode VII in order to ensure the best possible experience for our fans.”
There’s no indication as to when we’ll see the 3D versions of these classic (and not-so-classic) Star Wars films. Lucasfilm’s statement simply reveals that “We will post further information about our 3D release plans at a later date.”
Does this move signal the decreasing importance of 3D in our cinema – and indeed home cinema – experiences, or is this simply a logical move to make way for one of the biggest movie (re)launches in cinematic history?
