Sprawling online shooter PlanetSide 2 coming to PS4 in June for free

PlanetSide 2 from Daybreak Game Company has been given a release date, and it’s been confirmed that it will be free to play on PS4.

The massively multiplayer team first person shooter will be coming to PS4 on June 23 in Europe and North America having been in closed beta since the start of the year. It’s a console exclusive, although it’s already been available on PC for two and a half years.

When we say that PlanetSide 2 will be free to play, we mean it. You won’t even need to have a PS Plus subscription to play it.

PlanetSide 2 is a class-based multiplayer shooter set on a grand scale in a sprawling sci-fi landscape. It’s all about large factions battling for territorial control in huge open levels.

On PC, the game recently set a Guinness World Record for the most players online in a single FPS battle. 1,158 players took part in a single fight.

Over on the official PlayStation blog, the developer has promised that the PS4 version will be streamlined for console players, but that it will also have exclusive content. This will include a new battle map, Koltyr.

Daybreak has promised frequent game updates after its June 23 release, too. These will include “deeper features, holiday events and content, new in-game marketplace items and much, much more.”
