Spotify has hinted that it will match Apple Music‘s Family Sharing subscription deal.
Apple launched its new Apple Music streaming service at WWDC last night, with Spotify clearly in its sights. One of the key advantages of Apple Music over its established rival is a Family Sharing deal that allows six family members to have their own streaming accounts for a single monthly payment of $14.99.
At present, Spotify only gives a family of five a 50% discount off the usual subscription price, which equates to $29.99. Apple’s service will look far more appealing.
As you can imagine, Spotify isn’t taking this lying down, and plans to respond accordingly.
“We already have similar family pricing in some markets and we expect to offer competitive pricing everywhere in the near future,” Spotify’s global head of communications and public policy Jonathan Price told The Verge.
In one such territory, Sweden, Spotify charges families of five $20 per month. It’s still not as cheap or as extensive as Apple’s of course, but it shows that the company is already thinking about such package deals.

Whether Spotify can match Apple Music’s family deal will depend on how Apple came to such a low price point. If it was through aggressive negotiation with record companies, then you have to suspect that Spotify – the biggest player in the streaming music field – has a chance of attaining parity.
If, however, Apple is making use of its vast cash reserves to absorb the cost of such a deal, then Spotify will surely struggle to match it.
