Spotify just gave music hipsters the ultimate bragging tool

Everyone’s had that moment when a nobody band you really love hits the mainstream, and you need all of your mates to know you had the natural intuition – or blind luck, more likely – to place your lot on them first.

Music hipsters need fear no more, because Spotify has come to the rescue with a brand new tool that will give you definitive bragging rights for liking a band before everybody else.

It’s a web app called ‘Found Them First’ – find it here – and it lets Spotify users discover which artists they helped become popular.

It checks to see which breakout artists you discovered “early on”, and will even show you the date you first listening to a new artist.

If you rank within the top 1% to 15% of listeners, you fall under the “early listener” category, and you’ll see your ranking.

For the record, Spotify is classing “breakout artists” as anyone with 20 million cumulative song streams, as well as a growth rate of 2000% between January 2013 and June 2015.

“We love creating fresh ways for people to interact with music. This experience is an ode to the fans who truly love discovering new artists,” explains Jackie Jantos, Spotify’s VP of Creative and Brand Strategy.

Jantos continues: “Users are rewarded for listening early on, and earn some bragging rights. Of course, if you haven’t discovered any new artists early on, and want to, Spotify can help you with that!”

Spotify has come up against considerable competition this year, with the launch of Apple Music disrupting the music streaming market.
