Spotify's new dark theme

The Spotify music subscription service has undergone its biggest redesign yet, with a new dark palette.

"Today we’re launching the best-looking Spotify ever," starts a posting on the official Spotify blog. It refers to the striking all-black design of the new Spotify for PC and iOS.

Spotify reckons that this new dark theme makes content "come forward and 'pop.'" We’d also say that the service now stands out more when compared to (relatively) recent rivals such Google Play Music and iTunes Radio, which have opted for a white theme.

Besides shifting to a darker theme, the new Spotify also features "refreshed typography and rounded iconography."

It’s not just about the cosmetic changes, though. Spotify has added a couple of handy new features to the service as well.

Your Music at last enables you to gather all of your tracks in one location in the side bar. It also means that you can now save albums and songs without having to create playlists.

Spotify also claims to have improved the service’s Browse feature, which now delivers "even more relevant and localised content."

That seems to mean curated playlists for specific times of the day - so a midweek evening playlist might be fairly subdued, whilst a Friday evening playlist might be a little more upbeat as you get in the mood for the weekend.

The new Spotify is available now for iOS, desktop, and the web. Eagle-eyed readers will notice that there’s no mention of an Android update, but Spotify promises that the update "will soon be available across all platforms."
