Spotify has been updated to include a new 'Follow' feature, which brings it in line with social networks like Twitter and Facebook.

The Follow tab has begun appearing on the desktop Spotify app in place of the traditional People tab. It allows users to - you guessed it - follow specific Spotify users and artists, and to view extended profile information for them.

As revealed by The Next Web, the Follow tab now reveals things like Facebook friends who use Spotify and artist recommendations based on your usage pattern. The new service also appears to automatically follow any artists you have starred previously.

As mentioned, Spotify's profile pages have also been expanded. They now appear to show a user's recent activity - recently created playlists, starred songs etc. -  as well as a person's follower count.

Artists are also lumped in with general users, opening up the possibility for some direct music-themed interaction between the two. At the very least you should be able to check out artist-made playlists and recommendation through this new social network-like interface.

Interestingly, it seems as if key or popular musicians (the example used being Kendrick Lamar) will be given a 'Verified' blue tick by their name, rather like Twitter.

In related news, Spotify has also updated its iOS app to be more in line with the latest Android version. It now has a new swipeable side bar offering access to Radio, What's New, Playlist and more. There's also a new permanent 'now playing' bar along the bottom of the screen.
