Splatoon’s first major update is coming next month

Splatoon's first major update is landing next month, Nintendo has confirmed.

Nintendo has revealed new details on the first major update for Wii U exclusive shooter Splatoon, which is planned to be released on August 6 as a free download.

The inkcredible Splatoon update will add new weapons, game modes and boost the current level cap when it becomes available.

The update will include “two new matchmaking modes, new weapon types, an increase to the game’s level cap and more than 40 pieces of new gear,” including a fabulous chef’s hat and a badass minigun.

Squad Battle is a new game mode where friends can form a team of up to four players to battle other squads at random, a feature many fans have been requesting.

"After a player creates a squad, friends can be recruited to form a team of two to four inklings. Friends will always play together on the same team and battle against other squads at random," explained Nintendo.

Another newly added game mode is Private Battle, which allows players to battle in invite-only matches that can be customised however they like. This mode can be played with up to eight friends, providing plenty of potential for custom game modes.

The update will also increase the current level cap from 20 to 50, introducing an S and S+ rank in Ranked Battles.

Nintendo have also confirmed that a few new weapons will coming to Splatoon, including the Slosher and Splatling. Everything in this game is an ink pun isn’t it?

"The bucket-like Slosher weapons hurl ink straight ahead at an impressive range. By adjusting the angle, these new weapons can be used to splat opponents who are up high or even on the other side of a wall.”

"With the Gatling-style Splatling, players can charge all-powerful ink. A maximum charge unleashes the full potential of this particular weapon type."

Splatoon has received frequent updates since its launch back in May, providing players with free maps, weapons and items on a regular basis.

If more large scale updates such as this are planned for the future they are more than welcome, it is rare to see a publisher provide so much free content for a game, especially an online shooter.

Splatoon has sold over a million copies since its release on Wii U, and has proven to a be a successful new IP for Nintendo’s struggling console.
