The tech company behind the already-beloved BB-8 droid from Star Wars: The Force Awakens has promised its forthcoming consumer version will kick-start a revolution in the toy industry.
Sphero, who has teamed up with Disney and Lucasfilm to bring the real-life, non-CGI droid to life, says the BB-8 toy will be ‘authentic in every way to the entertainment on-screen.’
In an email update to those who’ve registered interest in owning a fully functional replica of the charming rolling droid will offer an experience only seen in science fiction until now.
The company wrote: “We know that our current fans, as well as our new Star Wars fans, will be expecting an extraordinary BB-8 experience. We are confident we can deliver that experience.
“This is the beginning of a revolution in the toy industry. Technology advancements have made it possible to build the toys of the future and create experiences that, until today, have only been portrayed in science fiction.
“Just think, people will be able to own a piece of the movie. They’ll have it in their homes, and will be able to relive an experience that is authentic in every way to the entertainment on-screen. It’s an exciting time, and we are thrilled you have chosen to be a part of this journey.”
The company still isn’t giving away specifics about the working BB-8 replica, such as price or release date, but is advising fanciers to stay tuned to the GoSphero Star Wars page.
