Sorry Apple Music, Spotify now has 20m paid subscribers

Ahead of the imminent Apple Music release, Spotify has announced its latest subscriber figures, revealing the company now has 75 million active users worldwide.

What’s more, 20 million of those users pay Spotify’s monthly $9.99 (£9.99) subscription fee.

That’s a fair leap on January’s figures, which revealed that Spotify had 60 million users, a quarter of which were paying subscribers.

Back in May 2014, the company only had 40 million users, of which 10 million used Spotify Premium.

That means Spotify has nearly doubled its entire active user-base in the space of one year.

We could have never achieved this growth without all of you: the music fans who listen, discover, share and celebrate music and artists every day,” said a Spotify spokesperson. “Thank you, 20 million times.”

The company has also revealed that it’s paid out over $3 billion in royalties, $300 million of which were paid during the first three months of 2015.

This comes after the company faced much controversy after music artists like Taylor Swift and Jay Z alleged that the Spotify free tier was bad for the industry.

It’s likely Spotify’s latest figure release is a show of strength, as the market leader gained a new rival this week in the form of Apple.

Apple unveiled its Apple Music streaming service on June 8, revealing a paid platform that includes a dedicated 24/7 radio station called Beats 1.

Both Spotify and Apple Music charge $9.99 per month for their streaming services, although Apple offers a slightly longer free trial period of three months – that’s compared to Spotify’s 60 days.
