Sony has officially launched the Sony Xperia ZR, which is capable of capturing images and shooting Full HD video underwater.

There's no denying that these sub-aquatic abilities are the Sony Xperia ZR's key selling point. The first thing that Sony notes in the related press release is that the Xperia ZR features "the highest level of water-resistance for capturing photos and Full HD videos underwater."

The Sony Xperia ZR is IP55 and IP58 compliant, which means that it can be submerged in 1.5 meters of water for up to 30 minutes with no ill effects. Add in the phone's dedicated camera key (something that the similarly water proof Sony Xperia Z lacked) and suddenly you have the potential for underwater photography and video taking.

Essentially, the Sony Xperia ZR is the perfect phone to take with you on your pool-side summer holiday.

With such a focus, you might think that the Sony Xperia ZR's other specs must be slightly underwhelming. While it's no Sony Xperia Z, though, it's a more-than-capable Android device.

It features a 4.6-inch 720p OLED display with an OptiContrast panel, which means that sunlight glare should be less of an issue - another incentive to take it on your travels. The Sony Xperia ZR is powered by a 1.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 processor backed by 2GB of RAM, so it's no slouch in the performance stakes either.

As discovered by Xperia Blog, the Sony Xperia ZR appears to be the final international name for the Sony Xperia A, which was leaked last week.

There are no specifics with regard to price or availability, other than the fact that "The Xperia ZR will launch in various global markets from Q2 2013."

In the meantime, check out our extended look at the Sony Xperia Z, the Sony Xperia ZR's big brother.
