Sony Xperia Z5 Premium might be the first ever 4K smartphone

Leaks about upcoming Sony Xperia smartphones have been trickling out for a while, but the latest is particularly interesting.

According to an unofficial Georgian Sony Facebook fan-page, the Japanese tech giant is plotting three flagship smartphones for 2015 – all Sony Xperia Z5 variants.

According to the post, we’ll first hear official word from Sony on the handsets at the IFA Berlin tradeshow, scheduled for early September.

It’s worth noting that this news comes from an unofficial page, as Sony pointed out in a comment to the IBTimes:

“The Sony Georgia Facebook page is an unofficial page and not owned by or associated with Sony Mobile. We don’t comment on rumours or speculation.”

The first is the Xperia Z5 Compact, which will purportedly feature a 4.6-inch 720p HD display.

That’s in line with last year’s Sony Xperia Z3 Compact, so nothing too surprising here.

The second claimed handset, is the Sony Xperia Z5, which has also been heavily rumoured ahead of this latest leak.

According to the Facebook page, this will ship with a 5.2-inch screen featuring a 1080p Full HD resolution.

Last, but certainly not least, is the mooted Sony Xperia Z5 Premium.

That’s a name we’ve not heard before, although there has been talk of a Z5+ and Z5 Ultra – this is likely the same device.

What’s special about the Z5 Premium is that it will, apparently, feature a 5.5-inch display with an eye-watering 4K/UHD resolution.

That’s a staggering 801- to 808-ppi pixel density, far above any other smartphone on the market today.

All three smartphones are claimed to carry a 23-megapixel camera with a F.18 aperture and a 1/2.2-inch sensor.

The devices will also reportedly feature a fingerprint scanner, a first for Sony Xperia smartphones.

We already knew Sony was working on a new Xperia product thanks to a teaser posted to the company’s official Twitter page earlier this week.

The tweet suggested the upcoming device(s) would have impress autofocus capability.

Of course, our jaw is still on the floor about the possibility of a 4K screen on the claimed Xperia Z5 Premium.

Having such a high-resolution display on a smartphone is sure to be an incredible drain on battery life. Moreover, it’ll be near impossible to tell the difference between FHD, QHD, and UHD on such a small panel.

We’ll just have to wait to see what Sony has in store for us at IFA, which kicks off next week.

Until then, take this report with a hefty pinch of salt – Sony hasn’t officially confirmed any of the above details.

Yay or nay for 4K screens on smartphones? Let us know in the comments.
