Sony Xperia Z5 could be the first to include fingerprint scanner

Sony’s Xperia smartphones are seriously powerful, but they’ve always missed one increasingly common feature – a fingerprint scanner.

That could be about to change however, as a new leak suggests Sony is finally ready to adopt the sensory tech in its upcoming Xperia Z5.

An image – posted to Twitter by ViziLeaks – appears to show a mystery Xperia handset with a biometric scanner built in.

Typically, Sony Xperia handsets have a small, circular power button on the side of the device.

This new device – pictured alongside an iPhone 6 and a smaller Xperia handset – has a flat, elongated power button.

What’s more, both Xperia handsets have fingerprint scanner setup menus displayed on their screens.

This suggests Sony may be adding a fingerprint sensor, following suit from rival manufacturers like Apple, Samsung, and OnePlus.

Interestingly, the tweet also refers to the phone pictured as the “Sony Xperia Z(TBC)”.

This suggests Sony may not have finalised the naming for its next flagship smartphone.

That wouldn’t surprise us – it’s tough to guess what Sony will call its future devices.

Confusingly, the company often skips generations, adds suffixes, and launches region/carrier specific handsets with different branding.

Our best guess is the Sony Xperia Z5, but an Xperia Z4+ release isn’t out of the question either.
