Sony Xperia Z4 will be exclusive to Japan

The Sony Xperia Z4 made a surprise appearance this morning, but it won’t be coming to the UK anytime soon.

Having debuted at a low-key event in Sony’s native Japan, it has now emerged that the Xperia Z3 follow-on will be exclusive to the Asian nation despite its flagship status.

According to reports from Russian outlet Hi-Tech, the Z4 will remain locked to Sony’s native land.

Despite failing to rule out the Z4’s eventual UK arrival, Sony has backed up these claims, confirming that at present the phone will remain exclusive to Japan.

In an official statement provided to TrustedReviews, the manufacturer tentatively stated: “We are considering the feasibility in other markets.”

If you’re saddened to be missing out on the iterative update, fret not. According to reports, Sony will bring a separate high-end device to international markets, including the UK.

Although not sporting the same Z4 branding as its predecessor, it has been suggested that the alternative handset will be introduced by the end of May.

It is not currently known what the device will be called or what specs it will feature.

Continuing Sony’s habit of six-month product cycles for its flagship phones, the Sony Xperia Z4 landed as a minor update to its predecessor.

Moving to a 64-bit Snapdragon 810 processor, the handset retains the Z3’s 20.7-megapixel primary camera and 5-megapixel selfie snapper. The phone’s 5.2-inch, 1080p Full HD panel has also been retained in favour of a move to a QHD display.

The Z4 has moved to a slimmer and lighter form factor, lining up at 6.9mm slim and 144g in weight, down from 7.3mm and 152g. This refined form means battery capacity has been cut, however, dropping from 3100mAh to 2930mAh.

The Sony Xperia Z4 will be released in Japan ‘this summer’.

“We are considering the feasibility in other markets.” You have to love PR BS speak.

I wonder if this stalling is to minimise exposure to the 810 processor and it's reported issues, to wait for the next generation chip or another supplier? I know a lot of the reports also say the 810's issues don't exist, but where there's smoke...

Just a thought.

This might be a sensible move on Sony's part. The Z series has not been a huge or even modest success in the West. Which is a shame because it has always consistently been up there in the design and specs stakes. So why not concentrate on Japan with future releases of this range. It's their native and probably most lucrative market. Instead, launch a new flagship model for Europe and the US. Start afresh while the Sony brand still has some impact. And if their new phone has a form more similar to the iPhone 6 or S6, who cares. It's a trend that sells. And Sony desperately needs a hit.

I was actively considering the Z4 as a replacement for my Nexus 5, however the lack of wireless charging is a dealbreaker despite almost everything else ticking all the boxes for me! :-(

Very annoyed that they prioritised making it 0.4 mm thinner (wow! much difference! very thinner! etc.) rather than include a Qi coil to make up for the removal of the magnetic dock port...

Some other sites are theorising that there may be an international version released at a later date with different (increased?) specs...
