Sony has launched two new Xperia handsets, offering mid- to low-end market entries focusing on a strong camera experience, the Sony Xperia L and Sony Xperia SP.
The Sony Xperia SP is the mid-range handset, offering an 4.6-inch HD touchscreen screen and 4G LTE connectivity, whilst the low-end Sony Xperia L packs a 4.3-inch screen and a dual-core processor. Both smartphone come equipped with NFC and an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera.

Powered by the latest Sony Mobile Bravia Engine 2, the Sony Xperia SP boasts a 4.6-inch 720p HD Reality Display for a crisp and colourful screen. According to Sony, the display is capable of making automatic adjustments in sharpness, colour and contrast to make sure the display reflects the content currently being viewed, for the best possible user experience.
Within its co-moulded aluminium body, the Sony Xperia SP offers what Sony calls a “transparent element” that changes colour to alert the user of any incoming calls, messages or emails, as well as pulsing along to any music played through the handset.
An 8-megapixel rear-facing camera is equipped with Sony’s Exmore RS for mobile and is capable of HDR shooting and quality low-light photography.
Also playing host to a Stamina battery mode, claiming to offer a longer lasting battery life, NFC One-Touch technology, and 4G LTE connectivity, the mid-range Sony Xperia SP will run Android 4.1 Jelly Bean via a 1.7GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon dual-core processor.
Sony Xperia L Features
Most likely to be the cheaper of the two handsets, the Sony Xperia L packs a 4.3-inch screen that unfortunately lacks the 720p HD resolution of its sibling, instead offering a FWVGA display running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OS.
Powered by a 1,700mAh battery, the Sony Xperia L has a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor and 8GB of internal storage, expandable via microSD card.
Offering the same 8-megapixel snapper in the rear with the Exmor RS sensor, the Sony Xperia L captures HDR stills and video, making the handset a great point-and-shoot option for the budget-conscious consumer less concerned with 4G signals or the top of the range processing innards of the likes of the Sony Xperia Z.
Both handsets come equipped with Sony’s Walkman, Movies and Album media apps and with ship with three colour varieties.
The Sony Xperia L doesn’t have the colour changing transparent element of the Sony Xperia SP, but does feature an LED strip that flashes any notifications for its user. It doesn’t boast 4G LTE connectivity, but has NFC functionality and the battery Stamina mode.

Both the Sony Xperia SP and Sony Xperia L will be released some time in Q2 of this year, with three colour options of white, black and red available for each smartphone.
