Sony Xperia C3 launches as “world’s best selfie smartphone”

Sony has launched what it’s calling “the world’s best selfie smartphone” in the Sony Xperia C3.

Ostensibly a mid-range 4G Android phone with a 5.5-inch 720p display, the Sony Xperia C3’s headline feature is its front-facing camera.

Not only is it 5-megapixel – an unusually sharp configuration for a front-facing camera – and wide-angle, but it also features a flash, too. Night-time group selfies, anyone?

Of course, Sony has its own name for this feature: the “PROselfie cam.”

Besides this, the Sony Xperia C3 runs on a 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon CPU and 1GB of RAM, with 8GB of internal storage. The rear camera, meanwhile, is an 8-megapixel unit with an Exmor RS image sensor. That’s a mid-range specification, which hints at the young crowd Sony is aiming for here.

The C3 is a pretty slinky customer, considering that huge screen, with a 7.6mm-thin chassis that weighs a reasonable 150g. It runs on the latest version of the Android OS, 4.4 KitKat.

Another interesting spec is dual-SIM compatibility, which suggests that Sony is also looking to developing countries with the Xperia C3.

The Sony Xperia C3 will be available globally from August, starting with China. It’ll launch in black, white, and mint. While there are no specific costs provided, Director of Xperia Marketing Calum MacDougall does say that the C3 will be available “for a mid-range price.”
