It's time for Android Nougat roulette! Sony Xperia owners, you're up first

Each time Google releases a new version of Android, smartphone and tablet owners face a wait to learn whether their handset will ever receive the upgrade.

Hot on the heels of the initial rollout to select Nexus devices on Monday, Sony has announced which of its devices will be graced with 7.0.

On its mobile blog the company revealed nine devices will receive Nougat.

Sony wrote: “We will make Android 7.0, Nougat available for: Xperia Z3+, Xperia Z4 Tablet, Xperia Z5, Xperia Z5 Compact, Xperia Z5 Premium, Xperia X, Xperia XA, Xperia XA Ultra and Xperia X Performance.”

Of course, as with any Android rollout announcement, promising the update is one thing, but delivering it in a timely fashion is another.

Sony says it has been “working hard to bring this major update to as many of our devices as possible, as quickly as we can.”

It promises to deliver further news on timing on the @SonyMobile News Twitter feed.

For owners of the nine devices, the wait begins. For those on unlisted Sony handsets, you’ll need to upgrade hardware if you’re ever going to chew on some Nougat.

Quite shocking that they'd not roll out to any of the compact devices (Z3, Z4) given they are of almost identical specs of their larger counterparts. Particularly as part of the 7.0 benefits is that the hardware requirements are lower.

Puts me off replacing my Sony with another this year. Hopefully the 2016 Nexus devices will be better than last year.

They said Z5 compact - that's not "none"
