Sony Unveils New Balls Ad For Wimbledon 3D

Sony Balls Ad Wimbledon

We all love a bit of tennis here at TrustedReviews and considering we are now going to get to see Wimbledon in 3D, we’re even more excited. Adding to that excitement is the release of a new version of Sony’s iconic Balls ad, just for Wimbledon.

The BBC announced last week that it would be showing the Wimbledon singles finals on the BBC HD channel in 3D, so it's free to anyone with a Freeview HD box, Freesat HD box, cable service or satellite package. This will be the Beeb’s first tentative steps into the third dimension after it revealed it was yet to be fully convinced about the platform back in March. Helping the state broadcaster out will be Sony, who will be using its experience from the Champions League final and Ryder Cup competition to capture every ace, forehand, backhand and Andy Murray grimace in HD 3D.

And to celebrate Sony has gone back and recreated the mesmerizing original Balls ad from 2006 but this time with a distinctly British flavour. The new ad was created by digital agency Crayon. The original spot, by Fallon, saw thousands of brightly coloured balls thrown down the hilly streets of San Francisco. In the new ad these are replaced with tennis balls, which are shown bouncing through Wimbledon's quintessentially English streets. Gildas Pelliet, Managing Director, Sony UK and Ireland said: “Sony is proud to be helping deliver Wimbledon for the first time in 3D. We have expertise at every stage of the 3D journey, which is why our professional cameras are used on major TV and film projects, and why our BRAVIA TV range offers such a great 3D experience.”

The first tennis ball to come whizzing out of your 3D TV will be on Saturday, 2 July for the women’s final followed the day after by the men’s final – so dust off those tennis rackets, sweat bands and tight white shorts and get ready for a couple of big days sitting on the couch.

I'll be interested to see the add in 3D and possibly the matches too, although a lot of tennis is side-on viewing of the ball going back and forth so that wont look too amazing in 3D. Plus, it'll really show a lot of 3D TVs in a bad light as they struggle to cope with the fast movement in 3D (anyone seen Pirtaes 4 in 3D? The 3D completely ruined the action scenes in what would otherwise have been a reasonably good film).

The addvert: Those Sony 3D glasses look ridiculous from the front!!! HOW wide are they???

The ad looked good because the balls were coming at you in some places and looked slighly 3d even in 2d screen.

Might go to the cinema and see how it looks. Won't be investing in a 3d for that though.

Great ad, but still not convinced. CGI?

Love that final graphic of the ball coming right at you. I winced internally, and I'm just sat here in my office looking at a computer screen!
