The Sony SmartWatch 2 has been eclipsed by Android Wear-toting rivals like the LG G Watch and Motorola Moto 360 since launch, but now comes word Sony is ready to hit back with a new model.
A source tells Digi-Wo that the Sony SmartWatch 3 will launch at IFA in just three weeks’ time. But rather than adopting Google’s Android Wear OS – which is optimised for wearable gadgets – the device is said to run its own operating system.
Specs are a bit thin on the ground at this stage, but the Sony SmartWatch 3 is rumoured to have a built-in Wi-Fi module, so you can use it online without having to pair it with your smartphone. Of course its functionality is likely to be limited without a smartphone, but Wi-Fi is a neat addition nonetheless.

So what else can we expect from Sony’s next timepiece? The source claims it’ll have wireless charging too, just like the Nokia Lumia 920. That means instead of plugging it in to juice it up, you just place it on the charging plate.
It’s also rumoured to be dust- and water-proof, which is always handy.
