Sony sells off online gaming division

Sony has sold its online gaming company, as it continues to trim the fat in a bid to return to rude health.

The Sony Online Entertainment division is responsible for developing games like the Everquest series of titles and the PlanetSide MMO, which currently has a sequel in development.

SOE is now in the hands of an investment firm called Columbus Nova and the company will go by the name of Daybreak Game Company from now on.

The development of upcoming titles will not be affected by the buyout with Sony saying it’ll be ‘business as usual’

All SOE games will continue on their current path of development and operation. In fact, we expect to have more resources available to us as a result of this acquisition.

“It also means new, exciting developments for our existing IP and games as we can now fully embrace the multi-platform world we are living in,” the company said in a community release (report via Engadget)

The new company says development for PlayStation, Xbox and mobile will also continue alongside the Windows platform.

The sale is no real surprise as Sony looking to trim back on its less profitable ventures.

The firm is also rumoured to be considering selling its mobile division as the company struggles to keep up with the likes of Apple and Samsung in the smartphone stakes.

Last year the company also flogged off its VAIO laptop brand following the decline of the PC industry.
