Sony sells 16 million PS4 consoles

Sony has sold more than 16 million PS4 consoles to date, according to a recent report.

Less than a week ago Microsoft was celebrating the news that it had beaten bitter rival Sony for console sales in November, thanks to some aggressive pricing and an arguably superior roster of new and exclusive games.

However, a new report suggests that this victory was won by a fairly narrow margin, and that there's still a lot of ground for the Xbox One to make up.

VGChartz is claiming that the PS4 has sold more than 16 million units to date. This means that Sony sold around 1,193,346 PS4s during the lucrative Black Friday week alone.

Cast your mind back to those Xbox One figures for November, where it was claimed that Microsoft sold 1.2 million consoles in the US and UK (two of the most lucrative markets for both consoles) throughout the month.

We weren't given PS4 figures at the time, but as BGR points out, if this latest report is accurate then the Xbox One's victory must have been won by a fairly slim margin.

Meanwhile, the overall figures show that Microsoft still has a lot of work to do. Prior to the Black Friday period, Microsoft claimed that its was approaching 10 million Xbox One consoles shipped to retailers (note: not sold to customers).

Even adding a generous two million sales on top of that for the month of November, the Xbox One is still well short of the PS4 if these latest figures are anything to go by.

Given that these figures are two weeks old by now, the suggestion that Sony could hit 20 million PS4s sold by the end of the year isn't outside the realms of possibility.

Whatever the exact figures and their relation to one another, both the PS4 and the Xbox One are selling very well indeed as they head into 2015.
