Sony’s 4K movies will cost $30 in new “Ultra” streaming service

Sony will launch its 4K streaming service in April, but those hoping to cram expansive Ultra HD TV with new content should prepare to open up their wallets again.

The Sony Ultra service will sell movies for $30 (around £21) a piece, while those who already boast the titles in their collection will be able to update to 4K resolution for between $12 and $15 (around £8-10.50).

The Ultra service, first announced at CES back in January, will be available only on Sony’s new HDR 4K sets, which happen to run on Android TV.

There will be up to 50 flicks to choose from, all streamed rather than downloaded, so users will need a healthy bandwidth allowance, if they plan on repeat viewings.

Movies include Ghostbusters, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, The Walk, The Night Before and Concussion. Those who’ve bought the TV or plan to do so will receive four free titles when signing up for the Ultra app.

Customers of Sony’s cloud-based UltraViolet platform will also be able to access their content via Ultra.
