The Sony PS4 Pro goes on sale next month, but since its heavily-criticised launch event in September, we’ve heard little in the way of nitty-gritty details.
Mark Cerny, who presented the console to the world last month, has been briefing media outlets this week in a bid to close the knowledge gap.
Here are the highlights:
– The console is capable of running games and experiences in native 4K thanks to the 4.2 teraflops of power. That’s up from 1.8 teraflops on the original PS4.
– It’s has a second, identical GPU to provide all of that extra power. The PS4 Pro is able to run existing PS4 games simply by powering off that second GPU.

– Sony is using an upscaling technique called checkerboard in order to change the formation of pixels and fill in the games. This produces “extremely close to 4K results.” Games like Horizon Zero Dawn and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, which will run at 2160p resolution.
– Other games will be able to use the technique to hit a resolution of 1800p; those include Watch Dogs 2 and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided.

– Existing games will remain the same unless developers issue a graphics patch to upgrade the experience.
– Sony says game boxes and download pages will tell gamers whether a title is PS4 Pro ready, but haven’t figured out the details yet.
– PS4 Pro users won’t enjoy a better PSVR experience… yet. Developers could choose to take advantage of having more memory and performance through.
– Sony isn’t building a PS4 Pro Elite Controller a la the Xbox One and there are no plans for a 2TB console.
