Sony has announced pricing details for its 2014 4K TV range, with an entry-level model that could almost be classed as affordable.

The company will launch three new 4K TV set ranges, which it showed off at January’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, in June. Each range will feature a variety of sizes.

It might surprise you to learn just how affordable (relatively speaking) the entry-level X850 range will be. The 49-inch model will cost just $2,099 - that’s around £1,250 in UK money, though it’s unlikely to be such a direct conversion when these TVs reach our shores.

Still, when you consider that the first commercially available 4K TV sets retailed (and continue to retail) for around ten times that amount, that’s some progress.

Elsewhere in the Sony X850 range, the 55-inch model will cost $2,999, the 65-inch $3,999, and the  70-inch $5,499.

The X900 range (which has much better speakers, among other things) will see a premium of $1,000 on each of the above sizes, though there’ll be no 49-inch or 70-inch models. Instead, it will feature a 79-inch range topper for $8,999.

Finally, the premium X950 range will come in just two flavours - a 65-inch model for $7,999, and a monster 84-inch model for $24,999. Which is more like what we’re used to in terms of 4K TV size and price.

There’s no news as yet on UK pricing for Sony’s 2014 4K TV range, but we’ll keep you posted. It seems as if 2014 could be the year that 4K becomes a viable option to more than just the rich.
