Leaked press images of the new Sony QX1 suggest you’ll soon be able to use interchangeable lenses with your smartphone.
Sony’s QX smartphone lens camera range is a bit strange, but it looks like a new model is coming out a year after the Sony QX10 and QX100 were launched.
The QX1 seems to take the basic concept introduced with the original pair, but adds the ability to change out the lenses.
It looks like the QX1 would be made up of a basic smartphone sensor mount base and from there you could attach any of Sony’s E mount lenses. That means any Sony NEX series camera lenses would be compatible with the QX1.
According to Sony Alpha Rumours, the QX1 will come with an APS-C sensor, potentially with the same 24-megapixel sensor and fast autofocus as the Sony Alpha a6000. You’ll also get a built in flash.
As with the previous two models, it’s likely that the QX1 will connect to your smartphone via NFC or Wi-Fi Direct. Photos can be stored on microSD cards, to save taking up lots of phone memory.
It will be operated via a special app or the Sony Xperia Camera app found on all the Sony smartphones.
The report suggests Sony will sell the QX1 for €300 body only, or with a 16-50mm lens for €450 euros. That would equate to around £240 and £360 in the UK.
Sony should launch this brand new smartphone lens camera system at its IFA 2014 press conference tomorrow, September 3.
It would be unveiled alongside the flagship Sony Xperia Z3, the mid-range Sony Xperia Z3 Compact and an 8-inch tablet, the Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact.
