Sony PS4’s camera accessory will boast Kinect-like voice controls

Users of the Sony PlayStation 4 console will benefit from voice controls thanks to the microphone within the PlayStation Camera accessory, Sony has confirmed.

Following numerous reports and partial admissions over the last few months a Sony spokesperson confirmed the optional PlayStation Camera accessory will have Kinect-like voice recognition software.

In a statement, the company said: “Sony Computer Entertainment can confirm that PlayStation Camera allows for voice recognition and we will look forward to sharing more details in the lead up to the launch of PlayStation 4 on November 29.”

The spokesperson didn’t elaborate further, leaving the gaming world to speculate on how Sony plans to make use of the sensory technology when the PS4 goes on sale.

The camera’s voice capabilities were rumoured earlier this year before a video demonstration shot during at the GameStop convention in Las Vegas last month seemed to confirm matters.

During the spot, which you can see in the YouTube clip below, SCEA’s group manager of retail training and advocacy Sean Coleman said: “From navigational voice commands to facial recognition, the PlayStation Camera adds incredible innovation to your gaming.”

“When you add the PlayStation camera into the mix, the pair works together to expand upon system features and enhance your PlayStation 4 experience. The new stereoscopic lenses track your body movements in games or even recognize your face easier system navigation.”

The confirmation brings a little more intrigue as we wait for the PS4 to arrive on UK shores on November 29. Just when the gaming world thought all the cards were now on the table, Sony it seems has a few more to play.

Could voice commands for the $50 accessory be an ace up the PS4’s sleeve in its battle with Kinect?
