The Sony PlayStation 4 has the working title of "Orbis" and is headed for a late 2013 launch, according to the latest rumours. That gives the current PS3 another 18 months to squeeze out a handful of extra console classics.

Citing a "reliable source", Kotaku writes that the next Sony console will be called Orbis. Sony has refused to comment on the speculation. No surprise there, then.

Other than the word of this unnamed insider source, all we have to work on is that the orbis.scedev.net URL doesn't lead to a dead end. This is the web address of the Sony Computer Entertainment Developer Network, which supplies information for game devs - although there's currently no PS4-related content up there.

Orbis could quite easily be a codename for the upcoming console, one that is never used in a commercial setting. However, it does roll off the tongue rather easily.

Kotaku writes that the PS4 Orbis will not be compatible with current PS3 games, and will be able to trot-out 3D in 1080p resolution. Today's consoles can only usually manage 720p in 3D.

With over a year and a half to go until the console's launch, most of the questions we want answered are still a bit murky. Will it be an all-online console with no physical media? Will it be an uprated PS3 or something more dynamic? Will it incorporate smell-o-vision? We'll be back with official information as it's released. Sony has denied that the PS4 will show at E3 2012 in June but, as is ever the case with these kind of denials, that doesn't mean it won't show up.
