Sony Lavender leak suggests a reimagining of flagship Xperia line

Sony is plotting a design rethink for its Xperia range of smartphones, if a newly-leaked image is to be believed.

The ever-prolific @Upleaks Twitter account posted the snap on Friday, accompanied by the caption ‘Sony Lavender,’ which is rumoured to be the codename for the next flagship model.

The leak immediately leads to more speculation Sony is planning to overhaul the design of its somewhat stale Xperia smartphone line.

Friday’s post shows a handset handset with a razor-thin bezels, while there’s also a rather large looking camera lens with an LED flash, suggesting Sony’s next lunch will continue the recent trend of selfie-friendly snappers.

It also looks as if there may be front-facing stereo speakers on the device, similar to the HTC One range of smartphones.

Earlier rumours have suggested ‘Lavender’ will rock a 1080p screen, Android Lollipop and will be powered by a 64-bit Octa-core MediaTek chipset.

A reimagined Xperia flagship might explain Sony’s soft launch of the recent Xperia Z4 handset. The device, featuring only incremental updates over the equally incrementally updated Xperia Z3, is unlikely to launch in Europe or the United States.

Hopefully we’ll get a pleasant sniff of Lavender at IFA 2015 at the tail end of the summer.
