Sony launches PlayStation Evolution videos ahead of PS4 unveiling

Ahead of Wednesday’s expected PS4 release date announcement, Sony has teased the upcoming console by releasing a selection of videos detailing the evolution of the PlayStation brand.

Kicking off with the arrival of the original Sony PlayStation back in 1995, the trio of PlayStation Evolution videos have catalogued the console’s franchise history, from the founding of the Sony Computer Entertainment division back in 1993, leading up to the imminent PS3 announcement.

“The beginning”, “The Next Big Thing” and “Next Generation” for the original PlayStation, PS2 and PS3 respectively, it is widely expected that the newly released PlayStation Evolution videos will soon feature a new addition following this week’s February 20 Sony PlayStation event.

Although Sony has yet to confirm its eagerly awaited next-generation console will be the focus of this Wednesday’s New York based PlayStation event, using the tagline “see the future” and adorning the three PlayStation Evolution videos with the hashtag #PlayStation2013, the gaming giant is leaving little doubt in gamers’ minds that a PS4 release is on the horizon.

PS4 Rumours
Whilst a flurry of PS4 rumours have done the rounds in recent weeks, little is currently known about what Sony will incorporate within its upcoming Nintendo Wii U rival.

Following a number of leaks, it is widely expected that the next-generation PlayStation 4 will be partnered with a newly redesigned PS4 controller that will introduce a touchpad interface and integrated PlayStation Move motion gaming options.

According to latest reports, the repeatedly tipped PS4 controller will play host to “a combination of motion control, touch and traditional analogue buttons,” with the peripheral to be paired with a new “dual-camera” PlayStation Eye peripheral, boxed with every console.

“Sources close to the hardware have revealed to us that PS4 will ship with a redesigned controller which is the same size as an existing Dualshock but features a small touchpad in place of the existing Select, Start and PS buttons.,” recent reports suggested.

Further PS4 rumours added: “Incorporating Move functionality into every single PlayStation 4 controller will, hopefully, put an end to its mass-market neglect, with developers able to take advantage of its standardisation by incorporating motion support into every single game.”
