Sony today announced the launch of two new compact Action Cams, including a 4K edition called the 4K Action Cam FDR-X1000VR, at CES 2015.

Thrill-seekers will be pleased to hear that the new Action Cams include an enhanced version of electronic image stabilization system SteadyShot to help produce smooth and silky footage without any judders and tears.

Sony brought legendary skateboarder Tony Hawk on stage to extol it’s virtues following a video showing him using the new Action Cam while skiing, surfing, swimming and skateboarding. It’s a hard life for some.

The Action Cam FDR-X1000VR includes 100Mbps high-bitrate recording to ensure nothing is missed and allows for manual control over white balance and AE shift. It can also shoot at 120FPS (Full-HD) and even 240FPS (720p).

Sony has also made some improvements to captured audio with a new feature called Wind Noise Reduction to provide clearer sound.

Both Action Cams use a 1/2.3 back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS Sensor with around 8.8 megapixels and come with Wi-Fi and GPS. They are splash-proof but can withstand depths of up to 10m when enclosed in the included case.

Sony’s second Action Cam, the FDR-AS200VR, shoots at Full-HD.

Sony's attempts to usurp market leader GoPro will be available later this year. The FDR-X1000VR will be available from April 2015 and the FDR-AS200VR from March 2015, but both are available for preorder now from www.sony.co.uk.

The 4K Action Cam FDR-X1000V costs £359 while the HD version comes in at £319.
