Sony forms single PlayStation business in Sony Interactive Entertainment

Sony has merged its PlayStation operations into a single US-based company called Sony Interactive Entertainment.

The entities formerly known as Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. and Sony Network Entertainment LLC will merge into one company from April 1, it’s been announced.

Sony Interactive Entertainment will be based out of San Mateo, California, and its president and CEO will be Andrew House, the current CEO of  Sony Computer Entertainment.

“By integrating the strengths of PlayStation’s hardware, software, content and network operations, SIE will become an even stronger entity, with a clear objective to further accelerate the growth of the PlayStation business,” said House.

Meanwhile, in a related blog post, the current president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America Shawn Layden said that the merger meant “an even bigger emphasis on developing pioneering platforms like PS4 and PlayStation VR, world-class games from our World Wide Studios development teams, and innovative network services such as PlayStation Vue.”

Perhaps most notable is the fact that this new US company will be responsible for research and development of future PlayStation consoles, as well as their software and network services.

What’s interesting is that this is being done from a position of strength, with the PS4 the runaway leader of this generation of consoles. The most recent figure announced by Sony is that 36 million PS4 consoles have been sold to date.

Microsoft, for its part, stopped providing figures for its own Xbox One console several months ago, but it’s predicted to be in the region of 18 million – just half the PS4’s number.
