Sony Ericsson has announced updated versions of its two most compact smartphones bring HD video recording, larger screens, more powerful processors and an updated UI.
When we looked at the X10 Mini and X10 Mini Pro last year, we were impressed at what Sony Ericsson had managed to cram into such small handsets. The updated versions, now called the Xperia Mini and Xperia Mini Pro respectively, look pretty similar to their predecessors but pack in a lot more under the hood. The main difference is the larger screen jumping from 2.55in to 3in with a bump in screen resolution from 240x320 to 320x480 pixels. The display also comes with the Bravia Reality Display technology to make them brighter and with scratch resistant mineral glass. Another big improvements comes with the processor, going from a 600MHz processor to a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon chip.
The new handsets will both run Android Gingerbread with the custom Sony Ericsson overlay on top. A new feature of the UI is the ability to put up to four apps in each corner for quick access. The UI also has further social media integration with the newly announced Facebook inside Xperia which allows people to access Facebook from music, calendar or photo apps. The 5 megapixel camera at the rear of the handsets now allows for 720p HD video recording and a front-facing camera on the Xperia X10 Mini Pro will allow for video calling. The slide out keyboard on the Pro has also been improved with new directional buttons and by making it slightly bigger. There has also been a 30 percent boost in battery life which can’t be a bad thing.
We are looking forward to getting our hands on these handsets as they could be the perfect combination of compact size and high-end specs. The Xperia Mini will be released in the UK in August, with the Xperia Mini Pro coming some time in Q3.
