One of the major issues people have with Android phones is the lack of consistent updates to the software, with owners having to rely on individual manufacturers and then their specific operator to push updates to them.

With the launch of Android Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS), Google is hoping to unify the fragmented tablet and smartphone strands of the operating system – and hopefully make updating the OS easier.

We’ve previously heard from Asus who confirmed that its Transformer tablet – which has just been crowned Product of the Year – as well as the soon-to-be-released Transformer Prime will be getting ICS in the new year.

Now both LG and Sony Ericsson have confirmed that a range of their phones will also be getting the update.

LG confirmed that the Optimus 2X, Optimus Black, Optimus 3D and Optimus LTE will all be getting the update with a more specific timeline of the release schedule to be announced in December.

The South Korean company also pointed out that it was looking at bringing the update to other phones: “We are also continuing to evaluate the ICS OS to determine whether it is compatible with the functionality, features and performance of other LG smartphones to make the ICS OS available on as many LG smartphones as possible.”

Sony Ericsson (soon to be just Sony) also took to Facebook to announce that its Xperia range of handsets - like the Xperia Play and Xperia Arc S - will be getting the ICS update in March of 2012. The announcement came via the company’s Italian Facebook site but the company had previously confirmed the update was coming.

"We can today confirm that we plan to upgrade the entire 2011 Xperia portfolio to the next version of Android known as Android 4.0 or Ice Cream Sandwich," the company wrote in a blog post two weeks ago. "We are working on merging our current Xperia experience with the new features in Android 4.0."

Looking forward to getting Ice Cream Sandwich on your phone? Let us know what you’re looking forward to in the comments.
