Sony details PS3 to PS4 game upgrade scheme

Sony has published details on how PS3 gamers can upgrade selected cross-platform titles for use on the forthcoming PS4 console.

As the company announced at Gamescom earlier this year, there will be an easy way for gamers to upgrade cheaply when buying some titles that launch on the PS3 before the PS4 goes on sale, rather than buying two copies of the game for both platforms.

Now Sony has published specifics regarding the games available and the method of obtaining the upgrade. For a limited time only, Sony will offer upgrades for Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag, Call of Duty: Ghosts, Watch Dogs and Battlefield 4.

For those who buy the physical Blu-ray version of the PS3 game, they’ll need to redeem a special in-pack code on the PlayStation Store, which will in-turn allow them to purchase the upgrade.

Then, once the PS4 version of the game becomes available, gamers will need to insert the PS3 disc into the new console to activate the upgrade.

For digital downloaders of the PS3 game, the process is much, much simpler. They’ll simply be able to search for the relevant game on their PS4 and then pay the discounted $9.99 (around £6) to download and buy.

Sony is yet to confirm whether the upgrade price of $9.99 will be converted directly into sterling, or whether it will apply different pricing in the UK.

For Assassins Creed and Watch Dogs, the program lasts until January 31 2014, while the Battlefield 4 and CoD: Ghosts availability lasts until March 28 and March 31 respectively.
