Sony could announce more details about its mobile games project next month

A new rumour suggests Sony is preparing to officially reveal mobile games titles produced by its new ForwardWorks studio.

A tweet from the Wall Street Journal’s Takashi Mochizuki states the company will announce software titles and official partner companies on December 7.

However, the new mobile games are expected to launch in Japan only at first – though we could subsequently see them arrive in other markets.

The firm announced its new ForwardWorks division in March, which will produce smartphone games based on well-known PlayStation titles.

Games will come in the form of new titles and revived favourites which ‘cannot be played on the latest hardware’.

A previous report from Japanese news site Nikkei suggested Sony would announced the games themselves at the end of this year.

That same report also claimed the company would release the new titles in the business year ending March 2018, but that’s yet to be confirmed.

Sony is also yet to confirm the December event, so take Mochizuki’s tweet with due caution. But it does fit with Nikkei’s earlier suggestion of an official announcement at year-end.

Sony has previously tried to build a presence in the mobile gaming market, with the likes of Sony Ericsson Xperia Play and the PlayStation Mobile initiative.

It’s latest attempt should prove more successful if the company can bring fans’ favourite old Playstation titles to life on mobile.
