There have long been rumours about a more capacious PlayStation 3 and now there’s an official press release… (in Korean!)
Yes, an 80GB PS3 is on its way to shores nowhere near me or you (unless you’re Korean in which case – ”hello!”). Sony has also set a launch date (16 June) and announced a pre-tax 518,000 won price tag (I’d do the GBP conversion but it’ll only upset you).
Strangely the company denies having any plans to ship the (slightly) enlarged PS3 to any other territories even though sources report it has already been presented for FCC filing. Does any of this mean anything? Well, it means Sony is keen to protect its market presence in the Far East since the launch of the 120GB Xbox 360 Elite but little more. After all PS3 hard drives can be easily swapped out for any standard 2.5 incher. So can we expect any other hardware modifications in these beasties? Nope.
Speaking to GamesIndustry, an SCCE spokesperson said “The chassis of the 80GB Korean PlayStation 3 is identical to the chassis of the European version. The only exception is the larger hard drive.” He also confirmed “At this moment in time, there are no plans to introduce the 80GB version of PlayStation 3 in Europe.” I say he’s fibbing on that last point though…
Look out for dodgy imports coming your way soon…
