Hours after news of Whitney Houston death had emerged in the media, it appeared that Sony was looking to cash-in on the star’s demise by raising the wholesale price of two of her albums.

The price for Whitney Houston’s greatest hits album, The Ultimate Collection went from £4.99 to £7.99 early on Sunday morning on iTunes in the UK, while another collection, entitled Whitney: The Greatest Hits went from £7.99 to £9.99.

However the price hike was reversed by Sunday night, with the company issuing a statement to Billboard stating the whole thing was a big mistake: "Whitney Houston product was mistakenly mispriced on the UK iTunes store on Sunday.  When discovered, the mistake was immediately corrected.  We apologize for any offense caused."

According to an anonymous source who spoke to Billboard the price hike was an "internal mistake due to an employee error" and noted that only iTunes in the UK was affected.

However there were reports that prices on Amazon had also changed and a source at HMV who spoke to Billboard “seemed to imply, but would not confirm” that HMV had received a price increase as well.
