Sony announces Xperia C5 Ultra and Xperia M5

As promised, Sony has just announced a new Xperia phone in the Sony Xperia C5 Ultra. More of a surprise is the fact that it has also announced a second, the Sony Xperia M5.

Last week Sony took to Twitter to reveal that a new Xperia phone was coming on August 3. With the bezel-free Sony Xperia C5 Ultra leaking just days earlier, few were taking bets on what that phone would be.

Sure enough, the Sony Xperia C5 Ultra is the headline attraction of Sony’s August 3 reveal. It’s a sleek new mid-ranger with a bold 6-inch Full HD 1080p edge-to-edge display.

But that’s not the component that Sony is pushing here. As promised, the focus here is on the C5 Ultra’s photographic chops.

In what Sony is calling “an industry first,” the Xperia C5 Ultra comes with twin front and rear 13-megapixel cameras. Add in the fact that both come with flashes, and that the front camera has a 22mm wide-angle lens, and it means that your selfies should be similar in quality to your normal snaps.

Away from the camera and display, the Sony Xperia C5 Ultra is powered by a 1.7 GHz 64 bit Octa-core processor and 2GB RAM.

Also on the release roster is the Sony Xperia M5, a follow-up to last year’s lower-mid-range Xperia M4 Aqua.

The headline feature here, just like with the C5 Ultra, is the M5’s photographic skills. This time the main camera’s image sensor has received a massive boost to 21.5-megapixels. It can also capture 4K video.

Also impressive (on paper at least) is the Sony Xperia M5’s 13-megapixel front-facing camera.

That’s not the only area in which Sony has given its M-range a bit of a boost. Like the M4 Aqua there’s a 5-inch display, but here the resolution has been boosted to Full HD 1080p. It’s also switched to a MediaTek 64-bit 2.0 GHz Octa-core processor backed by 3GB of RAM.

One feature the Sony Xperia M5 retains from last year’s model is its waterproof and dust-tight body, complete with a capless USB port.

Both the Sony Xperia C5 Ultra and Sony Xperia M5 will be available from mid-August “in selected countries across emerging markets.” There’s no news on pricing as yet.
