While Sony isn’t exactly flavour of the month with users of its PlayStation Network (PSN) at the moment, following last month’s cyber attack, it is still hoping enough online gamers will be happy to stump up $100 for its official PS3 Wireless Stereo Headset.
Sony has announced the official headset in the US saying it will be available in September for $99.99 and while there is no official word regarding release and pricing in other regions, we hope to see the headset on this side of the Atlantic at around the same time. The standout feature of the headset is the 7.1 channel virtual surround sound, which will work best with games such as Gran Turismo and Killone which are designed for surround sound audio. Sony says the Wireless Stereo Headset lets you hear all the minor in-game audio clues clearly, “whether you are in a firefight in a first-person shooter game or racing for the checkered flag."
Connecting the wireless headset will be via a bundled USB Wireless Adapter. Controls on the headset itself will include volume controls as well as a microphone mute button which have been designed to be easily located while playing. On-screen headset status updates will let you know how much battery you have left and will give you additional sound controls. The microphone is retractable, meaning it won’t get in your way while you’re listening to music or playing on your own.
The headset does look pretty nice and in keeping with Sony’s design ethos so hopefully it will be coming to the UK in September - though those hoping one of these may be part of the “Welcome Back” package will probably be disappointed.
