Spend £15,000 on one of Sony’s new 4K TVs and you’ll have plenty to watch, including The Amazing Spider-Man and Taxi Driver.
Buy a Sony 4K TV in the US and the manufacturer will ensure you have plenty to watch, courtesy of a server loaded up with 10 movies in the ultra HD format.
One of the issues affecting sales of the 84-inch Sony XBR-84X900 (aside from its huge size and $25,000 price tag) is the fact that there isn’t a great deal of 4K content available to watch on it. Sony is aiming to give buyers an incentive with the server, which it calls the “4K Ultra HD Video Player”.
The server, which will be loaned to buyers rather than given to them to keep forever, comes with The Amazing Spider-Man, Total Recall, The Karate Kid (the Jackie Chan version), Bad Teacher, The Other Guys, That’s My Boy, Salt, Battle: Los Angeles, Taxi Driver and The Bridge on the River Kwai. It’s not clear how long buyers will be able to hold onto it for, but presumably it’ll be enough time to watch that lot. Or the good ones, at least.
The Sony XBR-84X900 boasts a resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 – around four times the number as 1080p HDTVs – and will upscale any non-4K content that is input. It’s available in the UK as the XBR-84X9005, and costs £25,000. Sony has not confirmed whether or not it will offer the 4K Ultra HD Video Player to UK buyers.
