Sonos update brings Play:1 sound boost, improved streaming content

Sonos has announced the latest software update for its range of multi-room speakers.

Titled ‘Sonos 5.1’, the update brings a host of changes to the platform, including a sound re-jig for the Play:1.

Sonos’ Play:1 speaker is the company’s entry-level multi-room device, and is set to see improvements to sound clarity thanks to the update.

This means that when you turn up the volume, vocals should sound more natural, all thanks to the device’s software.

The update will also bring optimisation to bass performance when you pair a Play:1 with the Sonos Sub.

Sonos is also scrapping the need for a wired connection on surround sound systems.

Before last summer, all Sonos devices needed to be connected either wirelessly to a Sonos Bridge, or to the router using an Ethernet cable. The 5.1 update changed that for the most part, but not for home theatre devices.

Now, you won’t need to connect an Ethernet cable to a Bridge, Boost, or Playbar, to enjoy home theatre through your Sonos kit.

The new update will also make it easier for third-party streaming companies to improve the Sonos listening experience.

Partners will now have access to an updated set of tools, allowing them to add things like time of day music recommendations to the Sonos app.

The update is currently available in beta on Android and desktop Sonos controllers, with a wider release set for summer.
