Sonos launches very limited edition Play:1 Tone speaker

Sonos will begin selling a new and limited edition variant of its popular Play:1 wireless speaker later this month.

The multi-room audio specialist is releasing the Play:1 Tone in “absolute black” or “pristine white” with a soft-touch matte finish from July 21.

There’s only 5,000 of each speaker up for grabs and they’ll be more expensive than the original too at $250 or £220, depending on which side of the Atlantic you’re on.

The idea behind the more demure clothing, which is a far cry from this year’s collaboration with Blue Note Records, is for the speaker to take become a more natural-looking spot in the home environment.

Tad Toulis, the Sonos VP of Design says (via CNET): “We want our products to reframe how people think about technology in the home. Part of how we do that is by focusing on simple things with innate power. This was our focus on Play:1 Tone. It’s a meditation on essentials.”

Interested parties with quick fingers will be able to snap up a Play:1 Tone edition from Sonos.com, at 4pm UK time on July 21.

The original Sonos Play:1 speaker which is the smallest in the company’s wireless speaker line-up is certainly worthy of a fresh lick of paint. It earned a 9/10 review from TrustedReviews in late 2013 for its great sound quality, good value and convenient size.

Owners of the original Play:1 will also be able to enjoy better sound thanks to the launch of software update 5.4 which has “enhanced the clarity and presence of the Play:1 sound as well as optimized the Play:1 bass performance when it is paired with a Sub”.
