Snail Games OBox Android console launched

Snail Games has unveiled its new Android gaming console called the OBox.

Chinese gaming technology manufacturer Snail Games has made its first leap into the hardware market with its OBox Android console.

The OBox was teased at the end of last year by the company, along with the company’s first Android smartphone, but now the Android console has been officially launched.

That means we now know the specs for the latest entry into the Android console arena.

The OBox runs on the powerful 2.2GHz quad-core Nvidia Tegra K1 processsor with 4GB of RAM. That processor is the same one as found in the excellent Nvidia Shield Tablet.

Snail Games is offering a variety of hard drive options, but you’ll also get 4GB of on-board flash storage.

Other key features of the Snail Games OBox include 10/100 Ethernet, two USB 2.0 ports and three HDMI ports. That means the Android console supports a wide range of display types.

The OBox also has 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity, along with support for H2.65, 4K video encoding and decoding.

Snail Games is also selling the OBox complete with a wireless game controller with motion controls and the standard array of buttons.

Like a lot of other Android controllers, including the Mad Catz C.T.R.L R, the OBox controller is the spitting image of the Xbox 360 controller, complete with the asymmetrical analogue sticks.

If you’re not keen on the OBox’s basic specs, Snail Games actually has four different modules, one for each of the motherboard, processor, multi-media and hard drive.

That means you can choose the specific modules you want when you buy the device.

However, Snail Games has yet to offer any pricing or global availability details for the OBox as yet.

Hopefully, we’ll get a little more information at CES 2015 next week as originally promised.
