Cisco data suggests that smart LED lighting will cut our energy consumption by up to 30 per cent.
According
to Ian Foddering, CTO of Cisco UK and Ireland, the way things are
starting to change is thinking of Light as a Service (LaaS).
Companies
are beginning to look at consistent networking, so each light can be
smartly managed in your home. This will enable intelligent “Load
Shedding”, which will let your system react to changes in supply and
demand.
An EnergyWise Control System means that your lighting will respond to human occupancy and energy consumption.
We’re beginning to see this with the introduction smart LED lighting systems like Philips Hue and the LG Smart Bulb.
Worldwide
20 per cent of all energy consumption is associated with lighting,
whether that be street lights or within homes and offices.
“The
adoption of LED light will bring the cost down, but the Smart LED light
will decrease costs by an extra 20 or 30 per cent”, explained Foddering.
In the UK, Philips Hue is the leading smart LED lightbulb, which works with a smartphone app to intelligently program your connected lightbulbs according to how you function in your home.
It is also capable of adjusting the lighting according to what activity you are using, to make it healthier for you and easier to save energy while still being able to function.
Of course, this extends too to the energy suppliers.
“It’s all about the Smart Grid. Power can be diverted to where it’s needed most,” added Foddering. “We’re starting to see smart devices on grid distribution lines”.
