Skype 5.8 For Windows Adds Full HD Video Calling

For many people living away abroad, Skype is their only way of keeping touch with people at home. However, for the most part, this results in stop-start pixelated conversations over poor Internet connections with friends and family.

The latest version of Skype has now added the ability to experience Full HD video calls with loved ones so you can see them enjoying the sunshine in far flung locations all the clearer.

While we certainly welcome the 1080p support in the latest version of Skype for Windows (v5.8), unless you have a Full HD webcam then it won’t really make much difference to you. Logitech’s HD Pro C920 is currently the only Full HD webcam on the market and will set you back £90 if you really want crystal clear Skype calls.

Skype 5.8

The integration of Facebook in Skype has been augmented in version 5.8 and Skype will now let you make video calls with Facebook friends who don’t even use Skype. All you need to do is select a friend in your list and click "video call." Simple.

The final major addition to this version for Windows, but only to Skype Premium users, allows you to share your screen or an application window with others in a conference call. To use it, select the “share my screen” option from the +menu during a call.

Skype has also fixed a couple of bugs as well as adding the option to put a Bing toolbar right into Skype.

The day they released the first version to drop the character counter for sending texts (obviously a deliberate ploy to have users go over 160chars and send 2 texts and therefore be charged double) and when they made it auto update without asking you (much like a virus) and removed the option to stop it auto updating..I deleted it and rolled back to version 5.1. Also STILL no 'Always on top' function and I have asked them directly 4 times to include it, back in the early days, I actually got a reply saying they had no plans to include it at that time....seriously, need an always on top function for all the multi taksers out there...

I'm using version 4.1 and you can share your screen. I did it just the other day to help someone with using the cmd screen. So not sure what's new there...
