Skylanders SuperChargers will allow you to use old portals with new game

Activision has confirmed Skylanders SuperChargers will allow you to use older portals with the new game and its toys.

Anyone who already owns a Skylanders game and its associated portal will be able to use it with the new title Skylanders SuperChargers when it launches later this year.

Although SuperChargers introduces vehicles to the series for the first time, along with a whole new class of Skylander known as SuperChargers, parents will be relieved they won’t need to buy an all new Starter Pack.

“We will have what we call a Digital Portal Owners Pack, which means that if you’re a prior Skylanders owner you can use your old portals for the new game.I mean, there are a lot of new consumers that come in and for those people we’ll have a Starters Pack,” explained Guha Bala, Co-founder and President of developer Vicarious Visions speaking to TrustedReviews.”But for the returning consumers we want to get them in as easily as possible. We want to make it so that if you’ve made an investment in your portal you can benefit from that.”

This has been a topical issue whenever new Skylanders games are released. Previously, the games have only been compatible with their associated portal, meaning parents have to fork out around £65 if they want their children to have the latest game at launch.

However, apparently with SuperChargers it’s all about the characters and the new vehicles, rather than the portal itself.

“It’s sort of like when you have a really good reason to [introduce a new portal], you want to be able to do that. For Trap Team for example, a lot of the magic was in the voices that come out of the portal. You’d lose that magic if you didn’t have the voice coming out.”

“But for SuperChargers, it was a technical challenge, we wanted to make sure that if you’re a player for Giants, or if you’re a player of SwapForce, you could come back and use the things you’ve already invested in.”

Skylanders SuperChargers is coming to PS4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii U on September 25 in the UK. There will also be a complimentary experience for Wii and 3DS.
