Skylanders is getting its own Netflix exclusive TV show

Netflix has announced that Skylanders Academy will launch exclusively for the service on October 28, 2016.

Based on the hugely popular toy-to-life game of the same name, Skylanders Academy will follow the heroic adventures of Spyro, Eruptor, Stealth Elf and more as they travel across the weird world of Skylanders.

“As darkness begins to threaten the balance of peace in the Skylands, Master Eon is forced to assemble a ragtag group of heroes to protect the universe from evil-doers Kaos and the Doom Raiders. Using their unique blend of personalities and elemental-based super powers, Spyro and his fellow Skylanders are called upon to set aside egos as they come together to maintain harmony and balance in the land. Jam-packed with humour, heart and memorable moments, Skylanders Academy promises to keep viewers on the edge of their seats with epic action for kids of all ages,” Activision explained in a press release.

Netflix certainly has confidence in the project, as the company has already commissioned a second season set to debut in late 2017.

For what is essentially a glorified kids show, Skylanders Academy has some seriously impressive star power behind it.

Written by Eric Rogers of Futurama fame, Academy will feature the voices of Ashley Tisdale (High School Musical), Justin Long (Dodgeball) and Jonathan Banks (Breaking Bad).

That’s an odd yet welcome mixture of voice talent, and should ensure we get a variety of fun, slightly dysfunctional characters when the show debuts next month.

The latest entry in the Skylanders series, Skylanders Imaginators, is launching on October 14 for PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii U.

PS4 players can also play as Crash Bandicoot in a series of unique levels exclusive to the platform by purchasing an all new starter pack.
