So it’s time to have another go at ”this” business model…
Streaming media is once again in the headlines and this time it is Sky, probably the biggest fish to try it so far, announcing its world domination intentions. Speaking in great generalities, Rupert Murdoch’s empire has said it will launch a service in conjunction with Universal Music later this year to provide access to the record label’s entire catalogue with a fixed number of monthly downloadable DRM-free tracks too.
Claiming a ‘World First’ because of this mix Sky’s COO Mike Darcey bigged up the proposal saying “Sky already has contact with one in three British homes through our television service and we’ve got plenty of experience of running a subscription model.” True Mike, but not entirely relevant.
Of course the success or failure of such a service will inevitably come down to price bands and whether Sky can add significantly more labels to its service come day one. After all if you can listen to service and cherry pick 100 to 200 DRM-free downloads per month for under £20 it sounds great, all you can eat with 10 to 20 downloads for similar money on the other hand will surely sink without a trace.
So over to you Sky… no pressure.
