Sky puts kids at the top of its on-demand agenda

Sky is set to take advantage of our relentless lust for on-demand content by dramatically expanding its line-up of children’s shows.

The telecoms giant has announced it will increase the number of episodes of kids’ TV by a massive 600 per cent, taking it from 700 to around 4,000 shows.

The process will take place “over the coming months”, and Sky claims the move will help lift the company above its UK broadcasting rivals in terms of children’s content.

The firm recently struck up major deals with a number of rights holders, such as Viacom and Turner, Silvergate and Zodiak.

As a result, youngsters will gain even more access to firm favourites like ‘Dora the Explorer’, ‘iCarly’ and ‘Ben 10’.

“Parents want the convenience of a quick and simple way to access lots of episodes all in one place,” said Luke Bradley-Jones, Sky’s brand director of TV products.

“That’s why we’re massively expanding the variety and number of shows available on demand – and putting them front and centre of the Sky+ TV Guide.”

The expanded kid’s content line-up should be available to the masses just in time for the forthcoming summer holidays.

The company recently revealed numbers that appear to confirm that demand for OD content is far from slowing down.

Downloads of on-demand programmes and films surpassed the 300 million mark over the last three months, representing a year-by-year increase of over 60%.
