Sky has launched a larger-capacity version of its Sky box. The DRX896 Sky+ HD 2TB box can store up to 350 hours of HD video.

At present, the Sky+ box with the greatest amount of storage offers 1TB of user-accessible space. The extra 500GB on offer in the Sky+ HD 2TB Digibox allows for up to an extra 110 hours of HD content. You'll get up to 350 hours of HD storage, or up to 1180 in SD resolution. This is using 1.5TB of the 2TB hard drive, as 500GB is locked-off as a buffer for streaming services.

The announcement of the new device coincides with the launch of Sky On Demand, which is effectively a rebranding of Sky Anytime. This is an on-demand catch-up service that - if anything - turns the 2TB storage of the new box into even more of a luxury than a necessity.

Sky was keen to big-up the impressive storage of the Sky+ HD 2TB box, saying that it offers "more personal storage than any other subscription TV provider, for example customers can record three times more high definition (HD) TV than with Virgin Media." 2TB Sky+ boxes have been available for some time now, but this is the first time Sky has offered its own solution - until now they were lower-capacity units with larger hard drives bunged-in by other parties.

The Sky+ DRX896 HD 2TB box will retail for £299.99.
