Sky breaks digital download records with Fifty Shades of Grey movie

Sky just announced its year end results, revealing impressive figures about its UK TV business.

Tucked away in the results was the following factoid: Universal’s Fifty Shades of Grey movie was the Sky Store’s most popular digital download.

What’s more, Sky sold more copies of the erotic flick than any digital retailer has ever sold on one of their titles in the UK.

That success helped contribute to a 77 per cent revenue increase for the Sky Store over the last financial year.

Sky’s TV service also saw a boon from Game of Thrones, with the season 5 finale achieving a record audience of 3.1 million in the UK and Ireland.

What’s more, seasons 1-4 recorded 23 million downloads on Sky Box Sets.

Sky now has over 12 million customers across the UK and Ireland, with on demand downloads and streams topping 2.4 billion across all of its TV services.

The company also now claims to be Europe’s biggest mobile TV provider, with over 6 million households having registered for Sky Go.

That’s Sky’s on-the-go TV service that lets Sky TV customers watch content on mobile devices.

As a whole, Sky reported a 18 per cent increase in annual operating profit, bringing the amount to an impressive £1.4 billion.

According to Sky, it added nearly one million customers during the 12 months leading up to June 30.
